Blemishes

Acne is one of the most common disorders of the skin. There are varying levels or stages of acne that range from the presence of a few comedones (blackheads), milia, and pustules to acute cysts, papules, pustules, and comedones. Whatever degree of acne that is present on the skin, the effects not only detract from the appearance of the skin, but also cause damage to self-esteem and confidence.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are characterized as a small flap of skin that hangs off the skin's surface. They are often found in areas of frictions such as the eyelids, underarms, between the thighs, the neck, and underneath the breasts. There is no established cause for skin tags, however some people may have a genetic predisposition to them.

Treatments include simple surgical excision.

Cysts

Epidermal inclusion cysts can appear anywhere on the skin but are most common on the face, neck, and torso. They often contain liquid or semi-liquid material and may grow and become painful if ruptured or infected.

Cysts often resolve on their own, but medical intervention may be required to resolve unsightly, painful, or infected cysts. Treatment includes draining the cyst or surgically removing it.

Lesions

Skin lesions encompass any irregularity of the skin in the form of a growth that appears different from the surrounding skin tissue. Lesions may be the result of sun damage, the aging process, allergies, infections, friction, disorders, and nutritional deficiencies.

Visiting a certified medical professional who specializes in treating the skin will ascertain the nature of the skin lesion and establish the appropriate course of treatment to address it.

Moles

Moles can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, and colours. They may be with us from childhood or develop as we age. Sun-related spots can be harmless or pre-cancerous. This is why physicians and surgeons encourage people to map their moles, essentially keeping an eye out for any changes that could indicate abnormal cell development.

When it comes to beauty marks, moles can enhance one's individual beauty, however, sometimes a mole may not be so flattering, or may become easily irritated due to friction with clothing. In these cases, patients can opt to have their moles removed.

Pilar Cysts

Pilar (trichilemmal) cysts are common fluid-filled growths (cysts) that form from hair follicles that are most often found on the scalp. The cysts are smooth and mobile, filled with keratin (a protein component found in hair, nails, and skin), and they may or may not be tender. Pilar cysts may run in families and occur most commonly in middle-aged women. Pilar cysts occur in 5–10% of the population. The cysts may spontaneously burst open (rupture), usually causing intense redness and irritation.

Treatment options include cutting into (incise) and drain the keratin and other material inside the cyst. Prescribe oral antibiotics if the cyst becomes infected (a rare occurrence). Surgically remove (excise) the cyst.
