About

A vasectomy is a simple, safe, and effective form of permanent birth control for men. A vasectomy works by blocking the tubes (vas deferens) that carry sperm from the testicles. This prevents sperm from entering the semen.

A vasectomy usually takes about 10 to 30 minutes.

Preparation

Bring a pair of tight-fitting underwear or an athletic supporter to wear after the procedure to support the scrotum and minimize swelling.

Shower or bathe on the day of the surgery. Be sure to wash your genital area thoroughly. Trim hair if necessary.

Arrange for a ride home after your surgery to avoid movement and pressure on the surgery area caused by driving.

Recovery

Restrict your activity for 2 to 3 days after your procedure. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and exercise, for about 1 week.

Use pain medications as directed by your physician.

You may bathe or shower after 24 hours.

Some scrotal swelling after the procedure is common. Apply an ice-pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time 3 to 4 times a day to help with pain and swelling.
